FESTIVAL DE LAS CALAVERAS || Longfellow Neighborhood
The 14th Annual Festival de las Calaveras, a volunteer-led Latino music and arts festival celebrating Día de los Muertos, returns on Saturday, October 31, at The Hook & Ladder Theater and outdoor Block Event at Minnehaha Ave & Lake Street in South Minneapolis from 3PM to 11PM.
In its first edition under a bold new identity as Caracol Latino Performing Arts—Minnesota's emerging multidisciplinary Latino arts center—the festival presents a three-stage program featuring Latin Grammy-nominated Making Movies (for the Minneapolis release of their new album Una Vida), cumbia punk pioneers Son Rompe Pera, Tropa Magica, and Flor Amargo, alongside a free outdoor block event headlined by lucha libre legend Mascarita Sagrada, the returning Bici-Katrina puppet bike procession (second year), and family art activities led by local artists.
Since its founding in 2013 by Tlalnepantla Arts, a grassroots community arts organization, Festival de las Calaveras has grown from a single Día de los Muertos ofrenda built on the land of a South Minneapolis community garden into a multi-venue, multidisciplinary celebration drawing thousands of attendees from all backgrounds each fall.
